The 2026 CPM Formula

How Creator Rates Are Calculated

Enter your average views and pick a format to get a rate range built from the same CPM formula in our 2026 creator rate guide: (views ÷ 1,000 × CPM) + production costs + usage and terms premiums. Add production and rights add-ons above to see how they adjust your rate in real time.

How this calculator works

Every rate this tool produces comes from one formula, taken directly from our 2026 creator rate guide: your average views divided by 1,000, multiplied by a CPM (cost per 1,000 views), plus production costs, plus a percentage premium for usage rights, exclusivity and any other terms the brand is asking for.

The base rate. Use your median performance over your last 9 to 12 posts of the specific format the brand is buying — not your best video, not your pinned post. Drop the single best and single worst result before averaging, so one freak viral hit does not inflate a number you cannot deliver again. Multiply that average by the CPM for your format. Where you land inside the range comes down to your engagement rate, your niche, and your audience's geography — a finance, B2B, legal or health creator can hold a CPM two to three times a general lifestyle creator's, and an audience that is majority US, UK, Canadian or Australian commands the top of the published rate.

Production costs. The base rate buys the media, not the film crew. Add production separately and itemise it — a brand that pushes back on your rate will often wave a production line item through without comment, because it is a budget line they already understand. If a brand books multiple deliverables shot on the same day at the same location, the production line is charged once, not once per deliverable.

Usage, exclusivity and other terms. Your base rate covers one organic post, live on your own channel, for 30 days, with no strings attached. Everything beyond that — a brand running your video as a paid ad, a category-exclusivity clause, a rush turnaround, a brand-written script, more than two rounds of revisions, or cross-posting to the brand's own channels — is priced as a percentage on top of the base rate. This calculator sums every premium you select and applies the total once, to the base only, exactly as the guide describes it. Usage rights in particular are the line item creators most often give away for free, and a year of paid usage is frequently worth more than the post itself.

What this tool does not model. A few production add-ons in the guide — a paid editor (your invoice plus 15%), props or wardrobe bought for the shoot (cost plus 20%), and travel to a brand-specified location — depend on a cost this tool does not collect, so they are left off the calculator; add them to your quote by hand. Off-platform usage (a brand's website, email, retail or out-of-home) is priced "per channel and up" in the guide rather than as a fixed range, so it is not modelled here either.

CPM benchmarks by format

The same table the calculator's dropdown pulls from — nothing here is rounded or adjusted for display.

Where these numbers come from

Every CPM band, production cost and percentage above is our own editorial estimate, calibrated against what creators are actually paid rather than derived from a single published dataset — no one publishes a sponsorship CPM benchmark with a stated methodology, so anyone claiming to quote one is asserting it too. The sanity check that matters is the output: at every creator size, the rate this tool produces overlaps the per-tier payouts reported across hundreds of thousands of real creator payments — which is asserted by a check that runs on every build. The guide behind this tool works a full deal end to end — one Reel, three Story frames, 90 days of whitelisting and 60 days of category exclusivity for a creator whose Reels average 78,000 views — and shows how a creator whose instinct said “maybe $1,500?” arrived at a defensible number several times that. Read it in the 2026 creator rate guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator give a range instead of one number?
Because a single number would be false precision. The same Instagram Reel is worth $20 CPM to one brand and $35 to another, and which end you land on is decided by things a calculator cannot see: how badly the brand wants your niche, whether the budget is already approved, and how well you negotiate. The range is the defensible bracket. Open at the top of it.
What views should I enter?
Your average views over the last 30 days, with the outliers trimmed. Not your best post, and not your follower count. A viral video that tripled your average is not what the brand is buying, and quoting from it means missing the delivery. For Instagram Stories, enter reach rather than views, because Stories are priced on reach.
Does this include production costs?
Only the flat ones you tick — a shoot day, a second person on camera, a scripted concept. Costs that depend on a real invoice are left out on purpose: a paid editor, props or product bought for the shoot, and travel are all billed at cost plus a margin, so the calculator would have to invent a number to include them. Add those to the total yourself.
Are these rates in US dollars?
Yes. The CPM bands come from US-market rate data, which is also the market most brand budgets are set in, even when the creator is not US-based. If you are pricing in another currency, convert the result rather than re-deriving it — the CPM is the part that travels.
The brand offered less than the low end. Should I walk?
Not automatically. A low offer is usually an opening position, not a budget ceiling, and brands frequently have a higher range already approved. Reply with the itemised breakdown this tool produces — base rate, production, and rights priced separately — so the conversation is about which line item moves rather than whether you are worth it.
Why is perpetual usage priced so high?
Because it is not a licence, it is a sale. Perpetual rights mean the brand can run your face in their advertising forever, including after you have moved on to a competitor, and you can never re-sell that inventory. The calculator prices it at +200% of base, which the underlying research gives as a floor, not a fair price. The honest default is to decline it and offer a long fixed term instead.
